1980's Washburn WP Series Les Paul Custom - Tokai Prototype? (Cherry Sunburst)
An incredibly cool piece of Japanese guitar history! We secured this from the owners of Tokai who dug it out of their warehouse last year along with a heap of other one-offs and samples that either never got finished or were never released. This seems to be a one-off or short run model from the Washburn WP series of Les Paul Custom models (likely a WP100 or above) made by the Tokai factory in Hamamatsu (note the Tokai style truss cover rather than the typical 3-screw one).
Built with a mahogany body and slim 60's mahogany neck with a flamed maple cap and a 22 fret ebony fingerboard, it weighs a hefty 4.6kg's. Classic Washburn logo and headstock shape, however this one has the Gibson style headstock inlay rather than the original one on most high-end Washburn WP's. This was dug out of the factory with no pickups and limited hardware so we installed a full factory NOS Tokai loadout (also from the Tokai warehouse) with Gotoh made humbuckers, Japanese hardware and vintage-style tuners.
Clean overall condition with a few blemishes to the finish as pictured likely from storage over the years. It looks as though it had never been assembled or played prior to us completing the build, the frets are as new and the neck is straight with a virtually untouched truss rod.
